ive given up on this country, if i was younger id be gone. there trying to drive us into early graves n i mean the holes that our taxes fix. bet they all meet over a pint on a saturday night and laugh at how they screwed the people last week n whoever screws us more next week buys the first round. nice one guys keep up the good work.

this country is going down every year…i own a bmw at the moment and due to pay tax in march 614€ with new budget it will be 660€. stupid government, what i am going to do is? i will buy a 1.0 litre car a put V8 engine into it, so i will atleast save money on TAX 🙂

Why do they not charge road tax based on CO2 emissions for all cars and not just on new vehicles registered from 2008 onward ?
Because for example , take a 2.2 diesel , Nissan Primera , CO2 of 164g/km, if this car is pre 2008 ,you pay 823 euro road tax, however if registered from 2008 onwards , you pay 481 after 2012 budget.
So at the end of the day , the car still has the same CO2 rating but a big difference in tax, the same effect on the enviroment !!!!!!

I agree with @Eddie. Has anyone calculated the savings if we abolish the road tax system altogether? Just charge it with the fuel. Although I am worried that it might increase fuel smuggling from N.I. If UK follows the same system then this will work.

Power is a problem,as it won’t take into effect any modifications to the car/engine, or that stated power is never actual power. No manurfacturers figures are ever correct when measured at the wheels.

Any road tax system should be based on the amount the vehicle is used on the road, therefore mileage, but that is not practical and not tamperproof. Keep road tax low and increase tax on fuel, the more you use it the more it costs. The harder you drive, the more it costs. The less you maintain your vehicle, the more it costs…

Older vehicles are far cheaper to maintain, considering the aftermarket parts and non “main dealer” garages providing as good a service, with a fraction of the price…

Why dosent the government do better at collecting car tax instead of raising it up for us drivers that do the right thing? I know loads of people that drive their cars with out of date tax, Id say about 10-15% of cars on the road are not taxed at all. Then there would be no need to increase tax.

Hey I really like the idea of older cars paying less tax. Clever. I agree your solution it is a bit complicated.
I wonder if tax was based on original sale price with some discount on lower co2 (we do have to help the environment). i.e. The more expensive your car the bigger the tax, which is reduced over time as the car gets older.
Good stuff cartell, a bit of lateral thinking is always useful, it got me thinking…..

I Am just back from a short visit to the USA and people over there could not believe that we pay about $8 for a gallon of fuel, I am in the Market for a second hand motor and was toying with buying a 5 year old range rover. 1200 per annun road tax and 25 mpg should have scared me away but it didn’t until now. The government has once again scared me into keeping the money in my pocket and out of circulation which will in no doubt effect there coffers. I really do wonder how we can pay continue to tax the Irish motorist to the bone. You should take care of your golden goose not suffocate it with crazy taxes.

Any reasoning on why you use power as a variable? Doesn’t make any sense at all to me? Surely a system like the UK’s is the simplest to follow, easy to implement and fair at the same time, no need to be coming up with new complex schemes.
